Treating Gum Disease? Is There Hope?

Over 50 percent of US adults have gum disease, yet only 3 percent accept treatment. The impact of untreated gum disease goes well beyond the mouth. It is linked to heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and certain cancers. Now, patients have a safe and effective treatment option that is less invasive than traditional surgery. A treatment option that can help your overall health.

Treating Gum Disease With the LANAP® Protocol

The LANAP procedure can be performed in as little as one treatment session. It utilizes a specific laser to eliminate the diseased tissue and bacteria without harming healthy tissue. Overall, this treatment returns the mouth to a healthy state.

The LANAP protocol uses the unique PerioLase® MVP-7™ dental laser to vaporize bacteria deep within the pockets of the gums while leaving healthy tissue intact. Patients undergoing LANAP treatment enjoy fast healing times and more predictable results.  Some of the primary benefits of LANAP laser surgery as compared to traditional cut-and-sew surgery are:

  • Less pain
  • Minimal bleeding
  • Less sensitivity
  • Minimal gum loss
  • Less swelling
  • Very little downtime after treatment
  • Fewer post-op infections
  • Promotes regeneration of supporting gum tissues
  • Healing is perceived to be faster and more comfortable than conventional surgery

This treatment is also safe for patients with health concerns.  Patients taking medicine such as Plavix or aspirin can continue medications throughout treatment.

All dentists who perform the LANAP protocol are required to complete Laser BootCamp®, an intensive three-day, clinical, hands-on, dentist-to-dentist training at the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry (IALD). An additional one-day advanced session at six months introduces dentists to further uses of laser technology and a final, one-day training at 12 months helps dentists hone and refine their techniques.  This training is unique in the industry and imparts the highest level of clinical knowledge.
