How Can the Nd: YAG Laser Help Patients With Bone Loss?

The neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd: YAG) laser produces a short pulse, high-intensity light in a targeted area and rapidly heats the tissue. The laser light then penetrates through biological tissue, reach the bone through the skin and muscle layers.

This laser is used in modern periodontics as a substitute to classic osseous surgery. Classic osseous surgery is the standard care treatment of advanced periodontal disease. However, it carries many negative side effects and is considered as obsolete. That’s because classic osseous surgery requires extensive bone cutting and shaving. Unfortunately, this often leaves high recession and sensitive teeth.

The laser assisted regenerative therapy called LANAP achieves better results. It leaves no stitches, side effects, and far less discomfort.

How Does LANAP and ND: YAG Laser Work?

The LANAP protocol is a proven treatment. It’s typically performed in a dentist’s office under local anesthesia to eliminate any possible discomfort. A tiny laser fiber (about the thickness of three hairs) is inserted between the tooth and the gum, and the infection is cleared away without cutting or stitching.

The unique PerioLase® MVP-7™ dental laser is used to vaporize bacteria deep within the pockets of the gums while leaving healthy tissue intact. Afterward, the tooth roots are thoroughly cleaned of tartar and plaque. The laser is used again with a different setting to create a stable, firm blood clot to seal the pocket. The dentist treats one-half of the patient’s mouth at each session. Most patients often drive themselves back to work or home following the procedure.

Patients enjoy faster healing times and predictable results. Some of the primary benefits of LANAP laser surgery as compared to traditional cut-and-sew surgery are:

  • Less pain
  • Minimal bleeding
  • Less sensitivity
  • Little gum loss
  • Less swelling
  • Very little downtime after treatment
  • Fewer post-op infections
  • Promotes regeneration of supporting gum tissues
  • Healing is perceived to be faster and more comfortable than conventional surgery

The LANAP protocol is also safe for patients with health concerns.  Patients taking medicine such as Plavix or aspirin can continue medications throughout treatment.
