We Exercise Our Bodies—Why Do We Forget the Muscles of the Face?

We Exercise Our Bodies—Why Do We Forget the Muscles of the Face?

We understand that the muscles of the body require regular activity to maintain their strength, tone, and function. We exercise our arms, legs, abdomen, and back, yet the muscles supporting the face and jaw are often overlooked.

How EMFACE® Supports Facial Tone, Natural Contours, and Healthy Aging

We understand that the muscles of the body require regular activity to maintain their strength, tone, and function. We exercise our arms, legs, abdomen, and back, yet the muscles supporting the face and jaw are often overlooked.

Facial muscles contribute to:

  • Facial expression and natural contours
  • Chewing and jaw movement
  • Lip position and closure
  • The appearance of the cheeks and jawline
  • Support for the tissues surrounding the smile

As we age, facial muscles may gradually lose tone while the production of collagen and elastin within the skin declines. Together, these changes can contribute to flatter cheeks, a softer jawline, reduced definition, and changes in facial expression.

EMFACE® offers a noninvasive, technology-assisted “workout” for selected facial muscles. It is designed to support the muscular and soft-tissue framework of the face while maintaining a natural appearance.

What Is EMFACE?

EMFACE combines two synchronized technologies during the same treatment:

HIFES® Muscle Stimulation

High-intensity facial electrical stimulation, or HIFES, creates controlled contractions within selected facial muscles. These contractions are intended to support muscle tone and the facial framework beneath the skin.

Radiofrequency Energy

Synchronized radiofrequency gently warms the overlying tissues and supports the production of collagen and elastin. These proteins play an important role in skin firmness, elasticity, and texture.

Together, these technologies address both the facial muscles and the skin without needles, incisions, anesthesia, or added volume.

Is EMFACE Like Exercising Your Face?

EMFACE is sometimes described as a workout for the face because it produces repeated, controlled muscle contractions during treatment.

Unlike facial exercises performed independently at home, EMFACE targets specific muscle groups using a consistent clinical protocol. Treatment intensity can be gradually adjusted based on the patient’s comfort, treatment area, and individual goals.

EMFACE does not replace physical exercise or general wellness habits. Instead, it provides a noninvasive way to stimulate selected facial muscles that can be difficult to isolate through voluntary movement alone.

The objective is not to create exaggerated features or an artificial appearance. It is to support the patient’s natural muscles, skin, and facial contours.

Preserve Your Body. Preserve Your Face.

Healthy aging involves more than maintaining body weight or physical fitness. The face also depends on healthy muscles, supportive tissues, bone, teeth, and skin.

Just as physical activity supports the body’s muscular framework, EMFACE is designed to support selected muscles that contribute to facial tone, structure, and movement.

Depending on the treatment areas and individual plan, EMFACE may help:

  • Tone selected facial muscles
  • Support natural facial contours
  • Improve the appearance of the cheeks and jawline
  • Encourage a firmer, more lifted appearance
  • Support collagen and elastin production
  • Soften the appearance of fine lines
  • Rejuvenate the face without needles or added volume
  • Preserve natural facial expression
  • Complement overall facial and oral wellness

Exercise your body. Support your facial muscles. Preserve the natural framework of your face.

The Aging Mouth and the Aging Face

The mouth and face do not age independently—they age together.

Over time, teeth may wear, shift, fracture, or be lost. The bite can change, periodontal and facial bone support may diminish, facial muscles may lose tone, and the lips and cheeks may receive less structural support. At the same time, the skin gradually produces less collagen and elastin.

These changes may influence:

  • Facial length and fullness
  • Lip and cheek support
  • The prominence of facial lines
  • The shape and appearance of the smile
  • Jawline definition
  • Chewing efficiency
  • Jaw-muscle comfort
  • Overall facial balance

Loss of teeth or tooth height may reduce support for the lower portion of the face. Excessive tooth wear can affect bite relationships and facial proportions. Clenching and grinding may place stress on the teeth, restorations, chewing muscles, and jaw joints.

Reduced facial muscle tone may also affect lip closure, movement, expression, and the natural contours surrounding the smile.

For these reasons, facial rejuvenation should not always focus exclusively on the surface of the skin.

Why Dentistry Matters in Facial Aging

Dentistry provides a unique perspective on the structures beneath and surrounding the smile.

Facial appearance and function are influenced by:

  • The presence and position of the natural teeth
  • Tooth wear and structural damage
  • The bite
  • Periodontal and bone support
  • Jaw-joint function
  • Chewing muscles
  • Facial-muscle tone
  • The lips and surrounding soft tissues
  • Skin quality and facial contours

At Preserve Your Teeth Dentistry, we consider the relationship between the teeth, bite, periodontal support, jaw joints, facial muscles, lips, and skin.

This allows us to approach facial rejuvenation as part of a broader commitment to preserving oral function and supporting the natural framework surrounding the smile.

A Comprehensive Approach to Healthy Facial Aging

No single procedure can address every component of facial aging.

Preserving the natural teeth and maintaining periodontal health remain fundamental. Bite problems, tooth wear, clenching, missing teeth, and structural TMJ disorders require appropriate dental diagnosis and individualized treatment.

EMFACE complements this care by addressing selected facial and jaw muscles together with the overlying skin.

It is important to understand what EMFACE does not do. EMFACE does not:

  • Move or straighten the teeth
  • Correct an unhealthy bite
  • Rebuild missing bone
  • Replace missing teeth
  • Treat periodontal disease
  • Repair structural jaw-joint damage
  • Directly prevent tooth loss
  • Add artificial volume to the face

Instead, it supports another important component of the aging mouth and face: the muscular and soft-tissue framework surrounding the smile.

What Happens During an EMFACE Treatment?

Before treatment, the skin is cleaned and applicators are positioned over the selected areas.

During the session, patients generally feel controlled warmth from the radiofrequency energy and rhythmic contractions of the facial muscles. The treatment intensity is gradually adjusted according to comfort.

A typical session lasts approximately 20 minutes. No injections or incisions are required, and most patients can return to their regular activities immediately afterward.

A typical initial facial treatment series commonly includes four sessions. The recommended number and timing of treatments may vary based on individual goals, clinical findings, and response. Improvements generally develop gradually as the muscles and overlying tissues respond.

Who May Be a Candidate for EMFACE?

EMFACE may be appropriate for adults who:

  • Have noticed reduced facial tone or skin firmness
  • Want to improve the appearance of the cheeks or jawline
  • Prefer a noninvasive and needle-free treatment
  • Want facial rejuvenation without added volume
  • Are interested in supporting natural-looking contours
  • Have realistic expectations about gradual improvement
  • Want to complement their broader dental and facial wellness plan

EMFACE is not appropriate for everyone. A consultation is necessary to review your medical history, dental condition, existing restorations, implanted devices, treatment goals, and other factors that may affect candidacy.
