Nd:YAG Laser Periodontal Therapy
Advanced, Gentle Care to Preserve Your Teeth
At Preserve Your Teeth Dentistry, we use advanced Nd:YAG laser technology to treat gum disease in a conservative, biologically guided way—often helping patients avoid surgery, extractions, and aggressive procedures.
The Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm wavelength) allows us to precisely target harmful bacteria and inflamed tissue while preserving healthy structures and supporting natural healing.
What makes the Nd:YAG laser unique?
The Nd:YAG laser operates at a wavelength that is selectively absorbed by pigmented bacteria and inflamed tissue, not by healthy tooth structure or bone.
This allows the laser to:
- Reduce harmful periodontal bacteria
- Decrease inflammation and bleeding
- Support healing and tissue stabilization
- Preserve healthy gums, bone, and teeth
Unlike traditional mechanical or surgical approaches, laser therapy can be gentle, targeted, and minimally invasive.
Two ways we use the Nd:YAG laser in periodontal care
1. LANAP® – Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure
LANAP® is a clinically proven protocol for treating advanced periodontal disease using the Nd:YAG laser.
In appropriate cases, LANAP may:
- Remove diseased gum tissue without cutting or sutures
- Reduce deep infection below the gumline
- Encourage the body to form a stable blood clot
- Support new attachment of gum tissue to the tooth
- Help preserve natural teeth that might otherwise be lost
LANAP is not just a laser—it is a specific, evidence-based treatment protocol performed by trained clinicians.
This approach is often chosen by patients who:
- Want to avoid traditional gum surgery
- Have moderate to advanced gum disease
- Wish to preserve their natural teeth whenever possible
2. Laser Pocket Disinfection (LPD) – Non-Surgical Bacterial Reduction
Laser Pocket Disinfection uses the same Nd:YAG wavelength, but at much lower energy levels.
This allows us to:
- Reduce bacterial load inside periodontal pockets
- Calm inflammation and bleeding
- Support healing during periodontal maintenance
- Stabilize gums between cleanings or after treatment
LPD is not surgery and does not remove gum tissue.
It is commonly used as part of:
- Periodontal maintenance visits
- Supportive care for patients not ready for surgery
- Ongoing stabilization after LANAP or deep cleanings
Same laser. Different purpose. Different outcome.
Although both treatments use the Nd:YAG laser, the energy level, time, and clinical goal are different.
Why patients choose laser periodontal care
- Gentle and precise
- Often less discomfort than traditional surgery
- Minimal bleeding and faster recovery
- Focus on preserving teeth, not replacing them
- Supports whole-body health by reducing chronic inflammation
Personalized care matters
Not every patient needs the same approach.
At Preserve Your Teeth Dentistry, we carefully evaluate:
- Pocket depth and bone levels
- Inflammation and bleeding
- Tooth stability and bite forces
- Overall health and goals
Your treatment is customized, not one-size-fits-all.
